Most Wanted 2012 Preview
A short preview of 2012 Need for Speed Most Wanted

Only two years have passed since the last Criterion Need for Speed game and they're at it again this year with Need for Speed Most Wanted. Most of you still remember the original Most Wanted from 2005 as a superb representative of the series and now Criterion are trying to use that as a base and make an even better game.

Original Most Wanted's visual style is back

The idea is that you start out in an open world where everything is available from the start. It's up to you then to find the cars hidden throughout the map, as they're all available if you can get to them. Every car will have a different set of races attached to it and winning those will give you upgrades, making cars even faster. There's also billboards to break, jumps to perform and fences to destroy, all building up your Speed Points which you can use to compare yourself with your friends. Destroying cops, increasing your heat level and even playing the game on different platforms, like Vita or iOS will also count towards your rating.

But the real competition will start when you switch to multiplayer mode. The best thing about it is that the transition is seamless: you remain in the open world with up to 7 others (11 on the pc) joining. There is no lobby and even when waiting for events, you can take down other racers to earn you points. The events are also not only limited to races, but range from racing through checkpoints in an open world, performing longest drifts or jumps, or speeding to the next meeting point. Some events might be individual while others will divide the players into one or more teams with common goals. Whenever an event ends, there's no loading, you simply drive your car and wait for the next event to appear on screen: finish the race first, turn back and take down your competition. Performing well in events will earn you points as well as taking down other players, meaning there's plenty of strategies to win a set of events and being the fastest in races will not guarantee you a win in the end.

Drive the fastest cars from the start

Having played both Burnout Paradise and the original Most Wanted, I have to say that this has Burnout written all over it. And while the priorities in game have shifted from racing to causing general mayhem, that might not even be a bad thing. How many of you started up the original Most Wanted just to start a police chase and destroy as many cops as you could?

anything you can say about the types of upgrades for the cars, maybe even how many cars there actually are in the game? i saw somewhere else some small and unfortunate number like 40 cars.

the producer said there were over 50 cars ,40 you have to find and about 10 or 12 most wanted cars, i guess the blacklist cars.

i wanted you to go more deeper into the type of environments in the game besides the city , i hope you drive up mountains maybe sum forest or hills, rural or country roads like paradise city.

Hold it !(10 on pc) and whats that 7 on the consoles , i though they have 12 player online?..very confuse right now.

Great overview Bojan. I'm planning on heading out to one of the EA First Play events down here in Australia where I should be able to get a bit of a go of this. So far it looks pretty promising compared to the past few releases, and knowing Criterion, they shouldn't disappoint (hopefully). Hopefully I'll be able to answer a few of the other questions people are asking.

@Phantom_pain33 he said 7 others, so 8 total on consoles & 12 on PC.

looks good. i like how you must 'find' cars to unlock them and there are specific events for each. NOT a fan of burnout handling at all though.
